Kiambu County Leading in Alcohol Consumption
According to the research conducted by the NACADA (National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse) it is clear that central is leading in Alcohol consumption. Kiambu County is the leading county in alcohol abuse followed by Nyeri and Kisumu.
John Mututho the chairman of NACADA said that 60% of alcohol produced in Kenya is consumed in Kiambu, Nyeri and Kisumu. He warns that this high consumption of alcohol will give a negative impact on the economy of Kenya.
Having bars operating in the estates and in the residential areas has increased the number of consumers. Especially with the recent operation against drinking and driving, many people prefer to drink in their home area. This has made it easier for youth and teens to access alcohol.
The number of bars in an area is also a contributing factor to increased consumption. For example in Juja there are 6,000 registered bars, which is very high comparing with places like Gem which has only 10 registered bars.
It is very discouraging to see an area like Gatunyu, which is off Thika town, has 31 shops and out them 26 are bars.
The majority of people who consume alcohol are in the age bracket of 17 to 40 years. Most of them abuse alcohol due to lack of employment.
