Hunger in slums has led to children drinking Chang’aa

Parents in some slums in Nairobi County are giving their children chang’aa in the morning because of lack of breakfast.

Children have been reported to attend school after consuming Chang’aa (an alcoholic drink). Teachers in schools have monitored the students and have been complaining that they are unable to teach students when they have consumed Chang’aa, as some of them could easily have taken one or two glasses of the beverage. Teachers are saying that the children cannot be able to concentrate; most of them end up sleeping in class. Teachers are forced to talk to the parents of the children who are coming to school when drunk.

Parents on the other hand say that they cannot afford to feed their children due to the hard economy times which have led to high costs of living. They said that getting breakfast in the morning is impossible. Also they do not have time to prepare breakfast because they have to sell their chang’aa to earn money to cater for their living.

These parents can afford to wake up early in the morning and prepare chang’aa but they cannot get time to prepare breakfast for their children. Parents indeed need to understand that chang’aa has negative effects on the lives of their children. They are raising up a generation of future drunkards. All parents should understand that the children are the leaders of tomorrow. It’s the responsibility of every parent to make sure that the children have access to the basic human needs.

A parent is a child’s number one role model. If parents are giving these children chang’aa, they believe that it is okay to drink it. So they cannot understand why the teachers discipline them for being drunk yet it is their parents who are giving them chang’aa.
