Construction of Nairobi’s Tallest Building Starts
The construction of the city’s tallest skyscraper has started following months of controversy.
Located along Moktar Dadah street, the 40 storey Hazina Trade Centre, currently housing Nakumatt Lifestyle, is estimated to cost 7.1 billion shillings according to Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi. Construction was set kick off in July last year but was stopped by Nairobi County Governor Evans Kidero.
He said the county had not approved the construction and asked for an updated Environmental Impact Assessment report from National Environment Management Authority(Nema).
The tower, architecturally designed by Mruttu and Salmann Associates will be constructed by a locally incorporated Chinese firm China Jiangxi International Kenya Limited. It will be constructed atop the existing eight storey building and is expected to transform Nairobi’s skyline.
The building will incorporate sustainable architectural features such as Fritted glazing, a helipad, a ventilated atrium, a city skyline viewing gallery, and vegetated roof terraces. Once complete, Hazina Trade Centre is expected to generate a monthly income of Kshs 100 million in rent.
